On Friday 10 March 2023, the Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board (ICB) reported “substantial issues” at University Hospitals Birmingham in relation to “culture, behaviour, leadership and governance that will need to be addressed”.
This followed claims by the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) to the BBC Newsnight programme that significant concerns about patient safety had been found following investigations into complaints about the Trust, including avoidable patient deaths. The PHSO said that these findings were rejected by the Trust.
Worryingly, the PHSO has said that it received the more complaints about University Hospitals Birmingham than any other Trust in the country in the last 3 years. An independent review of the Trust has been due for some time but the Trust has advised that it continues to be delayed due to procedural issues.
Davies and Partners’ specialist medical negligence team believe patient safety should be at the centre of all healthcare. Understanding and learning from patient safety concerns should be reviewed and used to inform patient care.
