The Ozempic effect – Divorce rates set to grow as waistlines shrink

Experts say that the rising use of weight-loss drugs (such as Wegovy and Mounjaro) could lead to higher divorce rates in the UK.

Academic research in Sweden has indicated that couples who undergo rapid weight loss are twice as likely to divorce.

Why? Renewed confidence is a key factor, experts say, encouraging people to either leave an unhealthy lifestyle or an unhealthy relationship behind them. Those embarking on their weight loss journey also tend to make other changes to the lifestyle in terms of diet and hobbies, which can lead to them seeking a partner whose lifestyle aligns with their newly found lease-of-life.

It is reported that the risk of divorce tends to increase a few years after treatment begins. Whilst the study in Sweden focused on those who had been fitted with gastric bands, only time will tell what the impact of so-called ‘fat jabs’ has on divorce rates in the UK.
